Brows: Soft, Strong & Transformative Shapes

How brow shape can soften, sharpen and change the way your face is read

Brows are small, but they are powerful. They sit at the centre of expression: surprise, softness, anger, elegance, drama, mischief. A tiny change in brow shape can lift the eye, soften the face, sharpen the bone structure, or turn a simple makeup look into something theatrical.

This guide is not about correcting your natural brows. Your face is not wrong. This is about understanding how brow shape works, so you can choose whether you want your brows to feel soft, strong, gothic, dramatic, feminine-leaning, masculine-leaning, or completely otherworldly.

    Softer brows can create:

    • a gentler expression

    • a more lifted face

    • a softer eye area

    • a more feminine leaning effect

    • a romantic, ethereal or delicate look

For a softer effect, the aim is usually to keep the brow lifted, diffused and gently structured. This does not mean your brows need to be thin or overly arched. A soft brow can still be full, dark, gothic and expressive, the difference is in the placement, pressure and edge. A slightly lifted tail can help the eyes appear more open, while a softer front keeps the expression less severe. Tiny hair-like strokes often look more natural than drawing one solid block of colour.

    Stronger brows can create:

    • more structure

    • more intensity

    • a bolder expression

    • a more masculine leaning effect

    • a sharper gothic or editorial look

For a stronger or more masculine leaning effect, brows are often kept fuller, straighter and less lifted. A lower, more horizontal brow can create the appearance of a stronger brow bone and a more grounded expression. This does not mean making the brow messy or harsh. The most convincing strong brows usually still have intention: fuller fronts, straighter lines, less arch, and enough softness around the edges to keep them believable.

    Dramatic brows can create:

    • theatrical expression

    • villainous glamour

    • high-fashion structure

    • exaggerated face shaping

    • a complete shift in the mood of the face

Dramatic brows are where makeup becomes performance. The brow can sit higher, extend further, sharpen the expression, or completely change the way the face is read. This can be beautiful for drag, theatre, cosplay, editorial makeup, gothic glamour, or any look where subtlety is simply not invited to the ritual.

    Gothic brows can be

    • thin brows

    • dark romantic arches

    • straight editorial brows

    • a bleached or invisible brow effect

    • shaved brows (hello, this is me)

    • elongated tails

    • high drama black brows (also me 😂)

    • intentionally sharp edges

    • brows matched to the mood of the look

If you do not want to commit to shaving or removing your brows, brow blocking can help you experiment without making a permanent change.

Gothic brows do not have to follow beauty rules. They can be soft and haunted, sharp and severe, thin and 90s inspired, heavy and vampiric, or almost erased for an ethereal editorial effect.

The question is not, “Are these brows natural?”
The question is: what kind of creature are you becoming today?

    Brow blocking for transformation

Brow blocking is a performance technique used when you want to temporarily erase or flatten the natural brow so a new shape can be drawn over the top. This is common in drag, theatre, cosplay and editorial makeup because it allows the artist to completely redesign the face.

To block your brows, I usually find that a good glue stick and a good setting powder are your friends. Work in thin layers, let each layer dry, and set carefully before applying makeup over the top. If you are new to brow blocking, go slowly and be gentle when removing it. Avoid using products on broken, sore or irritated skin, and always remove everything properly at the end of the day. Your brows may be dramatic, but your skin barrier does not need to suffer for the art.

Brows for hooded, deep set or heavier lids

If you have hooded, deep set or heavier lids (me again) , brow placement can make a huge difference. A brow that sits too low or slopes downward can make the eye area feel heavier, while a slightly lifted tail can help create more space and openness.

This does not mean hooded eyes need to be “fixed.” It simply means that brow shape can work with your eye shape rather than fighting against it. For a more open effect, try keeping the tail lifted rather than dragged downward, and avoid placing too much darkness directly under the brow unless you deliberately want a heavier, moodier look. Cleaning up underneath the brow can also help create the illusion of more lid space.

    Common brow mistakes

The most common brow mistake is trying to force your brows into a shape that belongs to someone else’s face.

Tutorials can be helpful, but your brow bone, eye shape, lid space and expression all matter. A brow shape that looks soft and lifted on one person may look severe on another. A straight brow may look beautifully structured on one face and too heavy on another. This is why experimenting matters. Common things to watch for include:

    • making the front of the brow too square

    • using a brow shade that is too warm

    • dragging the tail too far downward

    • over-carving with a concealer that is too light

    • making both brows so identical that they look stamped on

    • choosing a brow shape because it is trending, rather than because it suits the effect you want

Brows do not need to be twins, they only need to belong to the same coven ☺️

    Final thoughts

Your brows do not have to follow one rule forever. They can be soft one day, severe the next, barely there for an ethereal look, or drawn high and dramatic for performance.

The power is not in having the “perfect” brow. It is in understanding how shape, placement and texture change the way the face is read. Your brows are simply another tool in the ritual. You do not need a huge kit to start experimenting with brow shape, but the right tools can make a big difference. A fine angled brow brush is ideal for creating hair-like strokes, sharper edges, elongated tails, or more structured brow shapes. Our Arcane Angles Brush Set was designed for precision work, making it useful whether you are softly filling sparse areas, sketching a stronger brow, or creating a dramatic performance shape.

For colour, our Occult Ink Pots can be used to create bold, expressive brow details and are available in different shades, so you are not limited to one version of a brow. A deep black brow can feel sharp, gothic and severe, while alternative colours can create something more editorial, supernatural or playful. Use a lighter hand for softer brows, build gradually for stronger brows, or lean fully into the drama if your look calls for something theatrical. Brows are sometimes there to cast the spell ✨
